The SC - Britain Voyages
The counties of South Carolina originated from the names of the Kings and Lord Proprietors of the Great British Isles.
In 1732, Roger Gordon led a group of 40 Scots-Irish immigrants from northern Ireland to settle in the area around the King's Tree on the east bank of Black River in South Carolina. The tree was named for an early explorer who carved an arrow into it to mark it as the "King's Tree" because tall white pines were ideal for use as ship masts. The town was originally called Williamsburg Township in honor of William of Orange, the Protestant King of England, but was renamed Kingstree in the late 19th century.
